Mini Pumpkins and Gourd Still Life

Trio Mini Pumpkins and Gourd

The vines are beginning to dry up for this season so I set up a little still life , sat on the ground and painted .  This trio of brightly colored  Turk's Turban squash with little feet on the bottoms are gems!  The large Martin House gourd was set up for subtle color and shape contrast in the background.  The Martin House  gourd acquired this name because they are made into bird houses that attract Purple Martins (like swallows).  I wasn't dressed warm enough for the crisp, cool fall air on this fall morning.  It was 66 degrees, windy and  I was sitting in the shade.  After spending a couple hours painting on the farm I took a few photos and returned to my studio to finish up.

Prizewinner Pumpkins

Back to the pumpkin patch for another study.   These large orange varieties called Prizewinners become enormous when fully grown.   Side by side some maturing sooner than others such as the small one dwarfed by the larger in this piece.  The blossom becomes the fruit.  It's here one day and gone a few days later replaced by another soon to be Prizewinner Pumpkin.

Cantigny Garden in September

Cantigny Garden vignette of brilliant fall colors contrasted by the lemon yellow planter absorbing the warm morning sun.  The Cantigny Gardens are beautifully designed and maintained throughout the seasons.  I spent a morning here with my  dear friend Peggy.  She asked to come along and observe me in the en plein air process.

Flying above the clouds captivates and reminds me of how glorious the heavens are, also the beauty and majesty of creation! Inspiration for this acrylic pour was taken from the window view of our jet on a vacation to Laguna Beach, California this summer.
